If you’re in Dallas like we are, then you know that our short (mostly nonexistent) spring season has ended, and the full onslaught of summer has reared its ugly head. In much of Texas this means sun, sun, and more sun.

As dermatologists, we see our fair share of clients that have skin disorders related to excessive exposure to sun and high temperatures. We thought we’d share some of the easiest ways to protect your skin this summer, and if you’re a Dallas native, how to protect your skin year-round!

Wear Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin is crucial to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Make sure to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Sunburns can cause pain and damage to your skin, so it’s important to take this precaution seriously.

Seek Shade

Try to avoid being outside during the hottest hours of the day, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you need to be outside, seek shade under an umbrella or tree to protect your skin from direct sunlight. The shade can help reduce the amount of harmful UV radiation your skin is exposed to.

Cover Up

Protective clothing can also help block the sun’s harmful rays. Wear long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes. These items will help cover your skin and protect it from the sun, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is important for your overall health, but it’s also essential for your skin. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. Proper hydration can also help prevent dryness, flakiness, and cracking, which can be common during the summer months.

Use Air Conditioning

Spending time in air-conditioned spaces can help reduce the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight. This can help reduce the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public spaces that do, such as libraries or shopping malls.

Visit a Dermatologist

Summer is a good time to visit a dermatology office for a skin check. A dermatologist can examine your skin for any suspicious moles or lesions and offer professional advice on skin care during the summer months. This can help you identify any potential skin issues early and take steps to address them, reducing the risk of more serious problems down the line.
